I was reading a friends (Scott Hodg)e blog and ran on a little bit of a rabbit trail yesterday. Scott leads THE ORCHARD in Aurora, IL. Check out his web www.orchardvalleyonline.com. Anyway besides seeing Scott’s usual creative and insightful bursts the simple word relevant popped into my thinking. I began to ask myself if I wa relevant. Then I asked what does it mean to be relevant? Webster gives a definition about connecting to the present need. This leads me even further into thinking. You see I want to be relevant. I want my life to matter. Relevance is not if I am hip which is good because sometimes I am a real Geek. Relevance is not achieved by having great technology (although that is cool). Relevance is when I connect with someone.
Then I began to consider God. He is relevant because He connects. The writer of Hebrews tells us that we have a High priest who is able to sympathize because He has been right where we are. He is also able to connect with God. In fact He has purposed to connect us to God. “He lives to make intercession for us.”
In the political climate that we are enduring each canidate is trying to cast themselves as the one who ‘understands’ where we are. They are trying to be relevant while casting the other as irrelevant. It gets pretty comical as they trade shots. God doesn’t have to try to be relevant because He is. The Bible says He is touched by the feelings of our infirmities.” He hurts where we hurt. Long before Clinton ever ‘felt our pain’ God felt our pain. In fact this connection led Jesus to the cross where the single most relevant act ever occured. Through the sacrifice of Jesus diving connection was made for us for eternity.
Even now on a daily basis God is relevant. As I seek Him I find Him. And when I am not seeking me He is setting up divine ambushes to connect with me.
I haven’t figured out if I am relevant, but I do know that God is. He matters and He cares!
Just a thought or 2…
