Last evening Margot (my beautiful wife) and I were enjoying a carmel frap at Starbucks. Heavenly weather in South Florida impressed us to sit enjoy the time on the sidewalk cafe. I shared with Margot how much I enjoyed spending time with young people (college aged). First of all it so so strange to refer to someone else as young. Nevertheless she agreed and then we met “D”. D _____ was working at the Starbucks cleaning the patio. Margot asked what he was using to clean the brick side walk and somehow the conversation turned to a discussion of this generation. D told us that he is 18 and has designs on making a difference by going into criminal justice. His greatest dream however is to “have a family”. D’s father was shot and killed at the age of 18 in a gang related disturbance. I was so impressed with this young man. His story is one filled with some bad choices, but it seems that now he is putting things together. Can you imagine what he is thinking as he now is the age his father was when he was killed? D doesn’t have a lot of faith in this generation, but he has determined that he wants a family and he wants to be a dad some day. He wants family.
Later I was catching up with a friend from high school days via facebook. This friend expressed the same desire. More than anything the desire for family. How blessed I am to have a wonderful family. Margot is such a wonderful friend and life companion. My kids are the joy of my life. I was blessed to be born into a great family. My own father is a chain breaker like D. He came from a rough family background filled with uncertainty and disfunction. And yet he chose to make the Ultimate Impact by his love and faithfulness to mom and us kids.
Today I remember that the ultimate impact I will have will not be after I leave my driveway and go to my work and ministry, but my ultimate impact is made at home by choosing to be a husband and dad that loves God and the beautiful family He gave me.
Home is the place where I can have the ULTIMATE IMPACT.
P.S. D, keep the faith. You can do it. You can break the chains. God Bless you as you build family and have the ultimate impact as well.
Your so RIGHT! Thanks for sharing!
Have a wonderful day!
How blessed we are to be in places from time to time in touch with others who remind us of what blessings and heritage we have as God fearing, God blessed, God chosen family
