Today we set out from Amman Jordan to Petras. We took the ‘King’s Highway’ south about 300 km. Petras is an ancient city built in 6th Century BC. There is one way in through the canyon and one way out. We hiked down, rather than riding a horse, donkey, camel or carriage. I must admit I kind of wanted to ride a horse and be like Indiana Jones. Taking my time was a great benefit though. Houses and tombs that are carved into the stone along the canyon walls. Inscription in greek and images built to worship line the pathway. This city had been built by the Nabateans, descendants of Ishmael’s oldest son.
I am walking amongst ancient history. This area is also known for one of the places where Moses struck the rock for water. Aaron was buried in this place. The guide points out the mosque that was built on top of the mountain that commemorates Aaron. This is also the land of Edom where Esau was from. We continue to walk until we see the famed Treasury.
This place is the convergence of so many faith’s. I see ancient carvings reminding me of the books that I studied in my Ancient Near Eastern Religions class. This is amazing.
All of this reminds me how true God is to His promises. Many times we forget the promise that God made to Hagar. He promised that she would have many descendants. He reminded her that He would not forget her. (Genesis 21) God kept his promise.
I think of Hagar must have felt as she left and was in the wilderness. But God remembered her.
